Rare Footage

Most of you in the immediate family know that my mom and dad went on a romantic mountain getaway this past weekend. After they got back, I needed to borrow dad’s video camera — and was surprised to see they had forgotten to remove the tape of their trip. Unable to resist my curiosity, to my own chagrin and at great personal risk, I “previewed” the contents.

Let’s just say this is one of the tamer clips from said video.

Enjoy Mom — you may never see dad dance like that again.

Time for a Toddler Bed Test

Ah, the milestones of growing.  Sitting up, crawling, walking, leaving the crib behind… The first three are pretty easily defined, but how does a parent decide when it is time for their child to leave the crib?  This video demonstrates one benchmark which is a pretty good indicator that it is time to kiss the crib good-bye.

It’s pretty clear that if Caleb wants to come and get us in the middle of the night, he can;  and so we enter in to a new phase.  (He is also getting very close to being able to turn door knobs.)

For those of you who care about technology, this is my first video using our VADO HD.  The quality was really nice… unfortunately converting it to work in iMovie took its toll.  I didn’t find iMovie as powerful as Premiere Elements, although at least iMovie hasn’t crashed on me at all yet.  (I have had hundreds of crashes in Premiere.)

A Walk To Remember

Oh, and was it a walk to remember.  It actually seemed pretty average, but isn’t that the way most memorable things usually begin?  The young plumber never sets out in the beginning to stomp on fire breathing dragons, save the princess, and ultimately become the most famous video game icon of all time.  But I digress…

To really understand, you need a bit of background.  Our property backs up to a small creek and Caleb and I usually spend a couple hours a week doing those profound things that fathers and sons have done for ages: trying to block or divert water, throwing various objects (mostly sticks and paper boats… OK, actually anything that we can lift or roll) in to the current, and sloshing back to the house with more mud on our clothes and shoes than we left in the creek bed.  Caleb especially loves to throw leaves and sticks in to the water, and it is never a problem, because thanks to my less than diligent landscaping there is always a plethora of leaves and dead branches.

Just down the street from our house there is a city maintained walking trail called the “Salisbury Greenway.”  About a half mile away there is a covered bridge that is sometimes our turnaround point for our evening walk.  That was the plan this evening, as innocuous as it may seem.

With the recent arrival of Joshua, and the cold weather, we hadn’t made the walk to the bridge in a few months.  Jessica and I were both commenting on how much Caleb had grown up since the last time we made the walk.  He actually walked along with us most of the way and didn’t need to be carried.  When we arrived at the bridge he pulled himself up against the railing — which is close enough together to keep him from slipping through — as he oohed and awed at this much larger and swifter body of water.  I even commented on how much deeper it was now than the last time.  (Our creek is one of the tributaries that runs in to this small river.)

As I stood there looking at all the areas, now submerged, that were dry just a few months ago, Jessica let out a “somebody just got hit by a bus” scream.  Because this is a pedestrian covered bridge, that particular scenario was highly unlikely, so I awaited the sound of a 23 pound splash hitting the water.  Yet when I looked over, Caleb was still standing up against the railing, peering down in to the water with a single arm extended through slats of wood.  I don’t think anyone can say for sure what is running through the mind of a 21 month old child, but I can speculate that it was something like this:

Oh! Look at this water!  This has to be five times as wide as the one we usually go to see — and it is deep too!  What a shame there are no leaves or sticks around here.  Maybe I can pry one of these boards loose.  Hmmm… no good.  They all seem to be as tight as my old man.  I can’t let this opportunity go to waste… hmmm… maybe if a pulled of a shoe.  But I really like these shoes my cousin gave me.  They light up when I walk.  Besides, it’s a half a mile back to the house and I really want to run around, not be carried all the way back home.

There has to be an answer (as he places his hand on forehead in “thinking” posture).  Alo, alo! What do we have here?  I thought I had a dilemma and all the time the answer was right before my eyes.

And with that he snatches the glasses from his face and and extends his hand over the water, which is right at the point we rejoin my tale above.  Whether it was because of, or in spite of, the raucous scream, the world may never know.  What we do know is that Caleb’s cute little blue glasses were tumbling lens over ear piece in to the depths of what had to be the geologically surveyed center of the river.  There was almost no splash as they slid in to the water like Michael Phelps going for the gold. (That ought to get the blog some hits in this news cycle, especially if I could also find some way to work in the words “bong” and “marijuana.”  Ha! It looks like I just did.)

With twilight setting in as the sun dipped to the horizon,  I descended through the briars along the bank and removed my shoes and socks, then rolled up my jeans.  Did I mention that this was the first warm day we have had in a while?  Within 10 seconds of immersing my feet in the mud, my toes started to tingle and ache.  Nevertheless I proceeded toward the MIDDLE of the large creek… at least the middle is pretty easy to find.  Did I also mention that the water had seemed a little high and swift from the bridge?  It turns out that jeans can only be rolled up so far, and unless I could find a way to transform mine in to “daisy dukes,”  I was going to be walking home in wet jeans.  It’s a good thing I had the foresight to give Jessica my iPhone before taking the plunge.

Somehow, after pulling up only one twig (that mysteriously looked like a pair of children’s eyeglasses) I saw the little blue glasses embedded in the sand under two feet of water.  I fished (ha!) them out and made a beeline for my socks and shoes on the shore.  Jessica was overjoyed.  Caleb ran down toward the brambles on the bank as I ascended. He jumped up, spread his arms and legs, and landed in an American Idol finale pose as he exclaimed “TA-DA!”  Hmmmm… there is something profound in that somewhere, I’m sure.

The air was warm enough that the walk back to the house didn’t leave me shivering.  Never being one to pass up a teachable moment, I took the opportunity to explain a few things to Caleb, like how much more expensive glasses are than sticks or leaves, and how the fish probably wouldn’t like that kind of lure anyway.  Oh, and how the next time he made mom scream like that he was going to be the one to clean out my boxers when we got home.

For all the excitement, as a parent, the buck stops here, and it was really our shortcomings the instigated the situation.  I guess we really should have taught him to say “My glasses need to be cleaned.  Could I have a tissue?”

So I don’t know if we can rightly call this “a walk to remember.”  At the same time, I don’t think it is one that we will soon forget.  (Sorry the pictures are a little blurry… it was getting dark.)

First Video of 2009

Well, we finally put a video together.  Who would have thought two little kids could keep you so busy.  On top of that, we had a bug going around that we affectionately named “the crapper.”  It stalked each member of our family down one at a time.  Needless to say, it has been taking a bit more time to get things done lately.  Check out the new photo album below as well. Enjoy.

You Might Be a Parent If…

  1. “Sleeping in” means sleeping to 7:30… A.M.
  2. Any time past 9:30 is past your bed time.
  3. Upon hearing “They’re two, they’re four, they’re six, they’re eight…” you drop in to a Brittish accent and perfectly complete the next line of the song. (I know some of you are humming…)
  4. “No,” “stop,” and “don’t” comprise 75% of your active vocabulary.
  5. Most of the “fine furniture” in your house is plastic and brightly colored.
  6. If you had any money to invest, you would sink it all in to a few brands — Energizer, Pampers, & Fisher Price.
  7. You’ve come to realize your threshold for “blowing chunks” is way beyond what you ever imagined.
  8. Any accident that doesn’t require a trip to the emergency room is a reason for celebration.
  9. All small objects in your house are mysteriously attracted to slots and holes, especially slots and holes in high dollar electronic equipment.
  10. You ever suddenly find yourself simultaneously soaked in at least two of the following: urine, poo, or throw up.
  11. Going anywhere takes exponentially longer than it ever did before.
  12. Your idea of a vacation is all the kids sleeping at once.
  13. You’ve ever bought the photo package upgrade because it would be a shame to throw away the ones that cost five times more than the ones you ordered.
  14. You have ever cried when you see all the Christmas gifts your relatives bring to your house.
  15. You know what a 5 point harness is and how to use it.
  16. You have developed a keen reflex for seizing people much smaller and faster than you.
  17. You can correctly decipher which of the ten meanings of “juice” is currently being used — and have even learned to use the word accordingly.
  18. Your wishlist includes the following: Boppy, Bumbo, & Hooter Hider.

Jeff Foxworthy has nothing on me.  Let’s see what you can add in the comments!

Survivor Baby

Joshua is now 3 1/2 weeks old, and it has been about that long since we updated the blog… oh how time flies.  He has survived Caleb…so far.  His head wasn’t too hurt when Caleb ran one of his cars into it.  He didn’t spit up too much when Caleb helped turbo charge his travel swing.  I think he kind of enjoyed the ice cream, little pieces of goldfish, and juice that Caleb tried to sneak to him.  He can still move his lower extremities after Caleb stepped on his bottom.  The numerous hugs and kisses that Caleb gives him must somehow balance things out in the end.

Joshua has already had quite a series of adventures. He has been for a ride on his brother’s back, gone for a train ride, and set the Guinness World record for most poopy diapers in the first month of life… and it hasn’t even been a full month yet. He even got to do a little role playing as baby Tron. (Ok, actually it was the billi-light, but still, check out the cool picture.)

Caleb has been equally busy, keeping us on our toes. He has had to find new ways of drawing mom and dad’s attention away from the new distraction. He loves to climb on anything, including his little brother. He is learning new words all the time and will often repeat words we didn’t know he could say out of the blue. Perhaps his cutest vocalization is when he points at Joshua and says “bey-bey” in mock guttural tones.

Caleb has already run through two sets of batteries for his Elmo Live. Caleb makes sure that Elmo is talking as he goes about his regular activities. While dad has been off for his paternity leave, Caleb has spent a lot of time with him tending to their makeshift dam in the backyard creek. Caleb got lots of toys for Christmas… I think we need to call off Christmas for the next few years. The house is filling up.

Well, I guess I should draw this to a close. Don’t forget to leave us some comments! Perhaps they will motivate us to get some more video up on the blog.

Metamorphasis… Finally…

It’s been awhile, but Caleb’s caterpillar finally morphed into a huge moth.  We knew you guys had been anxiously awaiting the outcome of the life cycle of our little, well maybe not so little, caterpillar- how big would he be, what color would his wings be, what would we name him.  Ok, we didn’t name him, but here are a few pictures from that pretty exciting day in the Johnson household.

Catch Up!

Welcome to our new Family blog.  With the arrival of Joshua in a little less than 7 weeks, we thought we would create a blog titled for the entire family.  I can’t believe the last time we posted was a month ago.  I guess that means this entry will be a bit long, so we can catch up on all the things Caleb has been doing.   Don’t forget to check out the pictures and even a short video below.

Caleb enjoyed carving his first pumpkin.  He’s all boy and really enjoyed getting his hands all mushy and dirty and covered with pumpkin guts.  He loves being outside and really likes to wade chest deep in to a pile of leaves.

Several weeks ago, Caleb took a trip to the  Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia with seven of his cousins to see the fall foliage.  Caleb watched his dad take off his shoes to wade in to a mountain stream… and followed him in with his shoes on!

While playing outside with dad, Caleb ran around the house, twice!  Whether its riding in his wagon, throwing a ball, or just finding dirt, water, and mud, Caleb loves to be outside.  When it is time to come back in, Caleb would rather stay outside.  He loves the playgrounds at parks and now slides right down the big slides whether or not mom and dad are ready.

For the political season, Caleb had the opportunity to attend a stump speech of Pat McCrory (who didn’t win). He enjoyed watching the helicopter land and take off.  The day of the election he spent a couple of hours working the polls with mom.  His cute smiles won a few extra votes for the Republicans.  He has the makings of a fine politician, right down to the crying and need for constant attention.  On election night Caleb watched the early returns from the Salisbury GOP headquarters.  He even took a picture with McCain and Palin… OK, so it was their cardboard cut-outs, but it was still cool.

The Fair, Young Republicans, and the Museum

A couple weekends ago we took Caleb to the Rowan County Fair.  He enjoyed eating cotton candy, riding the different rides, and mooing at the cows.  I think his favorite ride was the Spinning Teacups.  He almost won a bike, but our number was one off from the number called out.  There are a few pictures and even a short video of his time at the fair below.

Last Friday evening we attended the Young Republicans meeting.  Caleb was the youngest in attendance — except for Joshua — the Republicans at least acknowledge his human rights.  He quickly warmed up to the crowd by running to and fro throughout the building.  And when asked if he wanted a bite, he decided to share a donut with Ty Cob, a Republican running for the U.S. House of Representatives in our district.

Today he enjoyed an afternoon playing with his cousins at the Children’s Museum in Greensboro.  He even played in the cockpit of a plane donated by Timco Aviation, the company where his daddy works. He loved all the different activities and was upset when it was time to go.

It’s Been Awhile…

Man, we sure haven’t posted anything in awhile.  Our apologies to our many faithful readers.  Caleb has been enjoying the summer.  He’s been swimming, swinging, sliding, playing in the backyard, going for walks, and catching fireflys.

In the slideshow, you can see Caleb at Dan Nicholas Park. at the Diaz (x3) birthday party at Boune-U, and engaging in his current favorite extreme sport, freestyle climbing. Caleb has a few words that he likes to use all the time.  Almost everything is a da-da or bay-bay.  He also likes animal noises, makes a pretty good attempt at “hello” and we even heard him say “indeed” once directly after dad said it.

Caleb is doing a pretty good job on the eating front.  He ate his first whole corn dog at Cook Out a day ago.  He also is learning to go to bed at night without being rocked all the way to sleep.  Once he gets drowsy Jessica will put him in his crib and he will doze off listening to his lullaby CD.

We will try to keep the blog updated more as we get closer to the arrival of Caleb’s little brother.  Stay tuned…
